Both halves feed the machine, and half of that breaker can trip while the other half stays in. That produces two quite different symptoms, and it is worth knowing both. Half tripped usually gives a drum that turns with no heat at all. Fully tripped gives nothing — a dead panel and a dryer that looks finished. In either case the action is the same and it is free: switch the breaker completely off, pause, and switch it back on. Pushing a tripped breaker without taking it fully off frequently leaves it exactly where it was, and this is where most of these attempts fail. A gas dryer is a different animal. Its drum, its controls and its igniter all run from an ordinary household outlet, so a dead panel there is a standard circuit question. Three things, in the order they cost. **The door.** A dryer will not run with the door reporting open, and the switch that reports it is among the most-used moving parts in the house — several thousand operations a year. A worn switch, or a striker knocked sideways by a laundry basket, gives you a machine that looks perfect and does nothing. Close it firmly enough to hear the latch and press start again. **Control lock.** A padlock indicator on the panel means every pad is disabled, and it is set by a hand or a cloth far more often than by anybody meaning it. It is held rather than tapped to clear. **PF, held from a power interruption.** Storms take the power out across this region several times a season. A dryer running when it happens abandons its cycle and waits. Restarting it is the whole fix. ## Two observations worth making before you call **Does it hum without turning?** That is not the same complaint as doing nothing. A machine drawing current and not moving is a motor question or something jammed against the drum, and it puts the belt and the rollers at the top of the list rather than the bottom. **Does the drum turn by hand?** Reach in and push it. It should move freely and coast a little. A drum that will not budge is seized, or something has wrapped around a roller or the belt, and either way that is useful before anybody sets off. Both take about a minute and both change what we bring. ## Why the door switch is worth mentioning specially On a badge kept as long as this one, the parts that fail are the ones that move, and nothing in a dryer moves as often as the door. A machine bought twelve years ago and used four times a week has opened and closed something in the order of fifteen thousand times. The switch behind that is a small, inexpensive, stocked part, and replacing one on an otherwise sound dryer is among the more satisfying repairs on this site. It is also the one people least expect, because a door that shuts and looks shut feels like it cannot be the problem. ## The order matters more than the list Everything above is arranged by what it costs, and that is deliberate. Panel, fuel, breaker, door, lock, power cycle. Six things, none of them requiring a tool, and between them they account for most of the dryers that will not start. Only after all six is the start switch or the control worth talking about, and by then the conversation is about a specific part rather than about a machine that does not work. ## What a start switch actually costs If all six free checks come up empty, the two remaining candidates are the start switch itself and the control board, and they are not close in price. The start switch is a small mechanical part behind the panel, and on a badge this common it is stocked rather than ordered. The board is the larger figure and it is diagnosed last for exactly that reason — on a dryer, four cheaper things produce the same silence, and fitting a board to a machine whose door switch has worn out gets you an expensive dryer that still does not start. That order is not caution for its own sake.
