# Maytag appliance installation

### What an older building does to a new machine

The opening in a 1970s Miami condominium is rarely the depth a current specification expects, and the shut-off behind the machine has usually not been turned since it was fitted. Both are found in the first fifteen minutes or they are found by a flood. A dryer arrives with no cord because the building may be three-prong or four; a range arrives set for one gas and the line carries the other. None of that is exotic on this make — it is simply what a replacement means in this housing stock, and it is why fitting is a job rather than a delivery.

What this involves

Cutout, clearance and anti-tip against the maker's published figures

The dryer duct is inspected and measured at installation, not after the first complaint

Run under load before we leave, not plugged in and left

The opening, before the appliance is unpacked

Measured against the specification rather than against the machine that came out. Older South Florida kitchens rarely give the depth a current cabinet expects.

Level, feet and the anti-tip

Locked rather than snugged. A machine standing on three feet of four will knock under any load, and a range without its bracket is not installed.

Water, drain and duct

Shut-offs turned and tested, the drain given its fall, and on laundry the duct opened and measured. That is the connection most often left as it was found.

A cycle under load

Not a power-on test. The appliance is run, watched and handed over working, with the clearances and the settings written down.

### The store said delivery includes installation.

A delivery crew connects and leaves, usually inside twenty minutes and usually without a level or a manometer. What is different here is measuring the opening first, testing the gas joints and writing the result down, locking the feet, and running a full cycle before we go.

### Does the dryer duct really need doing at installation?

On this make especially, because every dryer it sells is vented. Fitting a new machine to an old crushed run guarantees the first complaint, and the run is cheaper to open while the appliance is already out.
