That sheet of glass is what keeps a spill off the electronics beneath it, and a crack reaching an edge is an open path from the hob into the live half of the appliance. Thermal shock causes most of them — a very hot pan onto a cold surface, or cold liquid onto a hot zone — and a top clamped a fraction too tight at installation causes the rest, which is why the opening is checked for square and support before the new panel goes in. Fitted into the same over-tight cutout, a replacement is a repair with a date on it.
