### An igniter fails slowly, which is why it is misread

It weakens for months before it stops, so what arrives is not a cold dryer but a dryer taking two cycles — and that gets reported as a heat problem or a duct problem and occasionally as an old machine. Watching one start cycle names the part before anything is measured: whether it glows, whether it lights, and how long each takes. After that it is the flame sensor, which shuts the gas within seconds when it cannot see a flame that is genuinely there, and the valve coils, which are where the money is and are therefore proved rather than assumed.

Igniter and flame sensor

Measured cold. A sensor that no longer sees the flame shuts the gas within seconds, which looks like an igniter and is not.

Measured individually. This is where the money is, so it is proved rather than assumed.

That is flame sensing rather than ignition, and it is worth saying on the phone because it changes what comes on the van. The burner is lighting; the control cannot see it, so it closes the gas deliberately.

### Is a gas dryer more expensive to repair?

Not usually. The common parts are comparable, and the diagnosis is often shorter because the start sequence is visible. What differs is that gas work has to be tested properly before the machine is handed back.
