# Maytag over-the-range microwave vent service

### On most kitchens with this badge, this is the hood

Which is why it has a page of its own rather than sitting inside the microwave repair. The appliance carries a blower, a damper, grease filters and — on a recirculating installation — a charcoal filter that almost nobody is told is a consumable with a life measured in months. Most of the calls that arrive as smoke in the kitchen are about this half of the machine rather than the cooking half, and most of them are cheaper than the owner expects: filters and duct before anything electrical.

What this involves

This is the hood on most kitchens with this badge in them

Grease filters and the charcoal filter first — both are consumables

A fan that starts by itself is usually the appliance working correctly

Which way it vents

Ducted outside or recirculating back into the room. It changes the diagnosis and the expectation completely.

Grease filters washed, and the charcoal filter replaced if it has ever been in longer than a year. Neither is a repair and both are usually the answer.

Damper, blower and thermostat

Including the thermostat that runs the fan automatically when the range below gets hot — which is why a fan starting on its own is normal.

The duct above the machine

Where there is one, and where it runs through a cabinet it is the part that gets crushed.

### The fan starts by itself when I use the range.

That is the appliance working correctly. There is a thermostat that runs the blower when the cooktop below gets hot, and it protects the machine from the heat rising into it.

### Ours vents back into the room. Does that matter?

It matters for expectations. A recirculating installation filters grease and odor and cannot remove heat or moisture, and once its charcoal filter is exhausted it is a fan making noise. That is a consumable rather than a repair.
