### A door held shut is often the machine protecting your floor

On a front-loader the lock has two jobs and people meet the second one first: it will not release while there is water in the drum. So a door that will not open is frequently a drain problem wearing a door complaint, and getting the water out gets the door open. The lock itself is a small part. What makes this repair come back is ignoring the door — a lock asked to hold one that has dropped on its hinge is being asked to do the hinge's job, and it will fail again in the same way inside a year.

### Why does it lock at all?

Because there is a drum of hot water behind glass. The lock is what stops it arriving on your floor, and a machine that refuses to open while full is behaving correctly rather than badly.
