### The oldest things in the room are usually the shut-offs

A machine that fills slowly, on one temperature only, or not at all — and most of the answers are upstream of the appliance. Screens behind the hoses block with the scale this water leaves; shut-offs behind a laundry closet are frequently older than the machine and have not been fully turned in a decade. Which temperatures still fill is free information that narrows it immediately: hot only, cold only or neither each point at a different half of the valve. The valve is then measured under pressure, because one can pass at rest and stall under load.

On is not the same as fully open, and a partly open valve behaves exactly like a restricted one. It is checked by hand rather than taken on trust.
