# Maytag water dispenser and filter service

### One restriction, two complaints, months apart

No water, slow water, or water that tastes of something — and nearly all of it upstream of the appliance. The filter, the line and the valve behind the cabinet account for most of it, and most of it is solved without a part. The detail worth knowing on this make is that the same restriction starves the ice maker long before anybody notices the dispenser, so an owner who called about ice in July and about water in October has had one problem twice. Flow is measured at the machine, in a jug, rather than judged from the kitchen tap.

Flow read at the appliance itself, never inferred from how the faucet feels

How old the filter is counts here, whatever its label claims

The same restriction usually explains the ice maker as well

Start at the shut-off

Under the sink or behind the cabinet, and often only part open since the day it was fitted.

The filter, and its date

Cheap, and past its life it restricts before it discolors anything. This is the commonest single answer here.

The line behind the machine

Kinked when the cabinet was last pushed back, or frozen where it runs through the freezer compartment on some cabinets.

Then the valve and the dispenser switch

Measured under load. A valve that opens at rest and stalls under pressure reads as an intermittent problem and is not.

### The filter is new and it is still slow.

New does not mean seated. A cartridge not turned fully home restricts more than an old one, and it is the first thing checked before anything behind the cabinet is opened.

### Does an old filter really affect the ice?

More than the dispenser, because the module fills on a timed valve. Less water in the same seconds means smaller, hollower cubes and fewer of them, with nothing appearing broken.
