    Ice maker not making ice

    Ice makers produce more calls than any other single part of a refrigerator and almost none of them are documented — this maker publishes no numbered condition for one anywhere. What it does publish is an indicator for the water system, and beyond that the diagnosis is water, temperature and the mechanism, checked in that order.

One control architecture runs across this whole corporation, which is why a letter-and-number on a range looks so much like one on a washer — and why a board diagnosed by resemblance rather than by measurement gets replaced perfectly well and changes nothing. Boards seldom die of nothing, and whatever killed this one is still in the appliance when the new one goes in.

    The maker's own first answer for a cabinet that is not cold enough, and in this city it is right often enough to do on every visit anyway. The coil sits behind a grille a few inches off the floor and collects what floors collect — dust, pet hair, and near the water a fine salt film that binds the rest into a blanket. Nothing on the appliance reports it. The compressor simply runs longer for less.

    Ice maker repair

    The module inside a refrigerator — a fill valve, a mold, a heater to let the cubes go, and whatever tells it the bin is full. This badge sells no ice machine of its own, so there is no second version of this job and no page here pretending otherwise. Nothing is published for ice on any cabinet, so the whole diagnosis is measurement, and most of it happens upstream of the module rather than in it.

    Everything between the shut-off and the mold, which is where most low-ice calls actually end. These modules mind flow rather than pressure, so a tired filter or a saddle valve left half open will starve one gradually enough that nothing ever appears broken — production just falls month by month. This is the least expensive ice job on the list, and the one people most often assume will be the dearest.

Whirlpool Corp does publish a branch about ice machines as appliances in their own right. Maytag does not, and the difference is not editorial — this badge simply does not sell one. A module at the edge of its rating, eight months a year

An ice maker is rated to make so much per day given a freezer at a certain temperature and water at a certain pressure. None of those three is generous in a South Florida kitchen in August, and the household demand is at its highest in exactly the weeks the appliance has least margin. That is why the complaint here is so often about quantity rather than failure, and why the honest first answer is a measurement of the fill rather than a quote for the module.

Before you book

Questions about Maytag ice makers

Production has dropped off and it is worse in summer.

Work backwards from the tap rather than forwards from the bin. The module is fed through a filter, a line and a valve, and a restriction anywhere along that chain shortens every fill without stopping anything — so the cubes get smaller and fewer while nothing looks broken. A filter kept past its date does it, so does a line pinched when the cabinet was last rolled out, and so does building pressure that sags in the evening. All three are measurable with a jug and a watch, and that measurement is the first thing done on site.

The cubes are hollow, cloudy or taste of the freezer.

Hollow and cloudy belong to the same short-fill story above. Taste is a different matter and it is almost never the module: ice is porous and an open bin absorbs whatever is stored beside it, so a bin sitting half full since spring will taste of everything that has been in that compartment since. Empty it, replace the filter, and let two days of fresh ice pass before drawing any conclusion.

It has stopped altogether and nothing is lit.

Nothing will be lit — this make publishes no indicator for ice on any cabinet it sells. On site the order is water at the valve, then whatever tells the module the bin is full, then the heater that lets the cubes go, then the module itself. More of these end at the second step than at the fourth: a shut-off arm resting on a heap of ice, or a supply valve somebody closed during a renovation and nobody opened again.
