    A Maytag washer counts the seconds it spends emptying, and when the water has not gone by the time the cycle expected it to, the machine stops and prints a name for it. That name is worth more to us than the puddle is. Get it written down before the power goes off at the breaker, because the display forgets and the standing water does not.

    Water under a washer travels before it stops, so where you find it is almost never where it left the machine. The useful question is not where the puddle is but when it appears — during the fill, during the wash, or only when the machine empties. Each answer points at a different third of the machine.

    A washer that walks is telling you the same thing whether it is six months old or fifteen years old — the basket is moving further than it should. What differs is why. On a new machine it is almost always installation, and on an old one it is almost always suspension. Very little else produces this.

    Noise on the spin is the one complaint on this badge where the age of the machine changes the answer completely. These get kept a long time, and a bearing that has been talking quietly for a year is a different conversation from a machine that started grinding on Tuesday with a hairpin in the pump.

    • A noise that only exists at high speed is a bearing or a bracket, not a pump
    • A noise that exists during the drain as well is very often something small and loose
    • Bearing noise starts quiet and gets worse over months — the history is part of the diagnosis

    Two complaints that arrive in the same phone call and are cleared in the same order: is the machine getting power, is it getting water, and is it being allowed to begin. A Maytag washer will not start a cycle it cannot complete, so a machine that sits there is often reporting something rather than broken.

    Dryer runs but does not heat

    A dryer that tumbles without heating has one of two very different problems, and which one it is depends on whether it burns gas or draws current. On an electric machine the drum and the heat are on separate legs of the same circuit, which is why a machine can run perfectly and still produce no warmth at all.

    • An electric dryer that turns but never warms is very often half a breaker rather than a part

    This is the complaint that costs the most money and gets reported the latest, because it creeps. A dryer that used to finish a load in fifty minutes and now takes two runs has generally lost airflow rather than heat, and it has been losing it for a year.

    • A moisture sensor that has scaled over will end cycles early on an automatic setting

    Dryer will not start

    A dryer that will not begin is either not being allowed to or not being powered, and the two look identical from the front. On this badge the first question is always whether the display is showing anything at all, because a dark panel and a lit one send us to opposite ends of the machine.

    An oven that heats but heats wrongly is the hardest complaint to describe and the easiest to measure. Before anything is called a repair, it is worth finding out whether the oven is actually wrong and by how much, because ovens drift over years and this one may only need telling.

    • These ovens have an owner-adjustable calibration and it is a menu item, not a repair

    Self-clean puts the oven above eight hundred degrees and locks the door until it is safe. Most of the time the door is still locked because the oven is still hot, and the answer is patience. The rest of the time the cycle put something out of action on its way through, and that is the call we usually get.

    • The lock will not release until the cavity has genuinely cooled — that can be two hours or more
    • A self-clean cycle is the single hardest thing an oven ever does to itself

    This is the one repair on the whole site where the owner regularly fixes it before we arrive, and we would rather say so. A gas burner that clicks and will not light is usually a burner cap that is out of position or a port blocked by something that boiled over, and both are a kitchen-towel job rather than a service call.

    • One dead burner is that burner; every burner dead is supply or ignition shared
    • An electric element that stays cold is usually the element or its connection, not the control

    A glass cooktop has no knobs, which means everything you can see is a message from the control. A panel that has gone deaf is far more often locked, wet or too hot than it is broken, and all three of those clear themselves once you know what you are looking at.

    • Water or a spill on the panel makes it ignore every touch until it dries
    • A zone that will not switch off should be killed at the breaker, not argued with

    Microwave runs but does not heat

    A microwave that runs without heating is the one appliance on this site where the honest advice is often not to repair it. The part that makes the heat sits behind a capacitor that holds a dangerous charge long after the plug comes out, and on a countertop machine the repair rarely makes sense against the price of a new one. Over-the-range units are a different conversation entirely.

    The first thing worth knowing is that this appliance is not going to tell you much. Across five hundred refrigeration pages this maker publishes a handful of indicator conditions and no diagnostic codes worth the name — which means a warm refrigerator is diagnosed by what it does, not by what it says. That is the honest starting point and it changes what we ask you on the phone.

    Water inside or under the refrigerator

    Water inside a refrigerator is nearly always the drain that carries defrost water away, and it has a specific and unglamorous failure — a small tube freezes shut, the water backs up, and it reappears under the drawers. It is one of the more satisfying repairs on this site because the cause is so consistent.

    Ice makers produce more calls than any other single part of a refrigerator and almost none of them are documented — this maker publishes no numbered condition for one anywhere. What it does publish is an indicator for the water system, and beyond that the diagnosis is water, temperature and the mechanism, checked in that order.

One of these pages links to nothing in the code archive, and that is deliberate rather than unfinished. This maker publishes no condition at all for a freezer that is not freezing or for an ice maker that has stopped — we counted across the whole library, and the number is zero.

If the machine prints something

  • Copy it exactly — a space or a dash between the characters identifies the control generation.
  • Photograph it rather than trusting your memory of it.
  • Do it before you cut power. The display forgets and the condition does not.
  • Say which appliance it is on: the same characters read differently on a washer and a range.

If it blinks, or says nothing

  • Count the flashes and the length of the pause, through two full repeats.
  • On a cold appliance, leave a thermometer in overnight and read it before the door opens.
  • Note whether the compressor is running constantly or not running at all — you can hear which.
  • Look for frost where there should be none. It is the clearest evidence a quiet cabinet gives.

Several of these end with us telling you not to book

A burner that will not light is usually a cap sitting a fraction out of place and a blocked port, and the honest answer is a paper clip and ten minutes rather than a visit. A cooktop that has gone deaf is usually locked. A dishwasher leaking on its first cycle after somebody used hand soap is not broken. We would rather write that down than take money for showing you a padlock symbol, and the pages say so where it applies.

Two things are wrong at once.

Say both when you book. A washer that leaks and will not spin is not two visits, but it is a different set of parts on the van than either one alone, and knowing that in advance is what makes it one visit.

The machine cleared its own message. Have I lost anything?

Some of it. A condition that appeared once and never came back may have been a single event — a power interruption in a storm, most often. If the behavior is still there we work from what the machine does rather than from what it said.

How much of this can I check myself?

That is not generosity; it is the order that produces the shortest visit. An owner who has already established that the vent hood outside is barely moving air has removed the entire heating half of a dryer diagnosis before anybody set out.

And what the machine is called matters

The second half of each page is the translation — what you would say, and what this maker calls it. Those are frequently not the same words, and knowing both is what lets you search the archive on this site or read the maker’s own material without guessing. Where the maker offers no word at all, the page says that in the first paragraph rather than at the bottom.
