A washer that walks is telling you the same thing whether it is six months old or fifteen years old — the basket is moving further than it should. What differs is why. On a new machine it is almost always installation, and on an old one it is almost always suspension. Very little else produces this.

Before you call, check the feet
Push down on each of the four corners in turn. A machine that rocks on the diagonal is not level, and on the tile floors that are standard here that is common enough to be the first thing anybody checks. The front feet screw in and out; the rear ones on many of these machines set themselves when you tilt the cabinet forward and let it back down. If the machine was delivered or moved recently, look behind it for bolts through the back panel — those hold the drum still in transit and a machine will shake itself across a room with them fitted.
What it usually means, by the kind of machine
One complaint, several machines. This maker still sells a top-load washer with an agitator alongside one without, a front-loader, and a stacked pair, and it sells the same oven as a range and as a wall unit in gas and in electric. The behavior you can describe is identical on all of them; the first hour of the repair is not. A front-load washer has a drain filter the owner can open and a top-loader has nothing to reach from the front, and that single difference decides how the same afternoon goes.
- Top-load agitator — Heavier basket, longer travel, and the version of this that genuinely moves a machine across a laundry room. The suspension rods are the part that wears and they wear as a set.
- Top-load impeller (HE) — These will refill and try to redistribute before they will bang, so a machine that has started banging has already exhausted the polite options.
- Front load — Shipping bolts are the classic. A front-load machine that was moved by anybody and then shook violently on its first spin has almost certainly had the bolts put back in or never taken out.
Sudden against gradual
This is the one symptom where the history is worth more than the inspection. A machine that shook for the first time last Tuesday and has never done it before has had something change — it was moved, the floor got wet under a foot, or somebody washed a rug in it. A machine that has been getting steadily worse since the spring is wearing out, and no amount of leveling will settle it.
On tile and on pedestals
Most laundry floors here are tile over slab, which is unforgiving of a machine that is a quarter turn out on one foot. Pedestals make it worse, not better, because they raise the whole cabinet and multiply any lean at the base. If the machine sits on one, say so when you book.
What the visit settles
Leveling is checked with a spirit level rather than by eye, because a floor that looks flat rarely is. Then the suspension is tested by pushing the basket down and watching how it comes back — a basket that returns and stops is healthy, and one that keeps moving has rods that are done. Both of those take minutes and neither needs the machine opened, which is why a shaking washer is one of the quicker diagnoses on this site.
