Wait first, then act

Give it two hours from the end of the cycle without opening anything. The oven will not release while it reads hot, and the cavity holds heat far longer than the outside of the door suggests. If it is still shut after that, cut power at the breaker for five minutes and restore it, which resets the latch position on many of these. Do not pull on the door and do not put a tool near the latch; the mechanism is motorized and forcing it turns a small repair into a door and a latch. If the oven is showing a code, write it down — a locked door with a code beside it is a much shorter diagnosis than a locked door on its own.

What it usually means, by the kind of machine

One complaint, several machines. This maker still sells a top-load washer with an agitator alongside one without, a front-loader, and a stacked pair, and it sells the same oven as a range and as a wall unit in gas and in electric. The behavior you can describe is identical on all of them; the first hour of the repair is not. A front-load washer has a drain filter the owner can open and a top-loader has nothing to reach from the front, and that single difference decides how the same afternoon goes.

• Electric wall oven — The motorized latch sits along the top of the door frame. When it stops partway the door stays shut and the oven refuses to heat, which is why this complaint often arrives paired with a cold oven.
• Electric range — Same latch mechanism in a lower cabinet. The heat of a clean cycle in a range also reaches the control panel above the door, which is the second thing that can be lost during a clean.
• Gas range — The lock behaves the same way, and the cycle is just as hard on everything around it. A gas range that lost its igniter during a clean cycle is a common pairing.
• Double wall oven — Only the cavity that was cleaned should be locked. If both are, that is worth mentioning because it points somewhere shared.

An honest word about self-clean

The cycle works, and it is also the most demanding hour an oven will ever have. Eight hundred degrees for several hours is hard on the latch, hard on the sensor and hard on the control sitting above the door, and a meaningful share of the oven repairs we see follow a clean cycle rather than ordinary cooking. If your oven is older, running the cycle shorter and more often — or wiping it out by hand instead — is a reasonable choice and not a defeat.

When the door finally opens

Look at the gasket around the cavity while it is open. Clean cycles harden it, and a gasket that has gone stiff and shrunk back at the corners is a slow route to the oven running cold. It is a cheap part and the right time to change it is while somebody is already there for the latch.
