Symptom

Maytag cooktop controls will not respond

A glass cooktop has no knobs, which means everything you can see is a message from the control. A panel that has gone deaf is far more often locked, wet or too hot than it is broken, and all three of those clear themselves once you know what you are looking at.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Dry the whole panel

Edges included. Then try again before anything else.

  2. 02

    Hold the lock button

Several seconds, not a tap. Look for a padlock symbol first.

  3. 03

    Reset at the breaker

A minute off. It clears a control that has stopped listening after a heat event.

  4. 04

    Note whether a code appeared

An unresponsive panel is one thing; an unresponsive panel showing an F code is a different and shorter diagnosis.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “A control lock disables the entire surface and is set by a wipe of a cloth”
  • “Water or a spill on the panel makes it ignore every touch until it dries”
  • “A zone that will not switch off should be killed at the breaker, not argued with”
A run of near-black slab-front kitchen cabinets photographed along its length with one strip of ice-blue light under the wall units and nothing else lit

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Maytag cooktop controls will not respond

Dry it, unlock it, reset it

Wipe the panel completely dry with a cloth, including around the edges of the glass where water sits after cooking — a touch surface reads moisture as a finger and stops accepting real ones. Look for a padlock indicator and hold the lock button for several seconds rather than pressing it. If a zone is on and will not turn off, go to the breaker and switch the cooktop off there; that is the correct response rather than a drastic one, and a surface that will not switch off should not be left running while anybody works out why. After a few minutes restore power and try again.

What it usually means, by the kind of machine

One complaint, several machines. This maker still sells a top-load washer with an agitator alongside one without, a front-loader, and a stacked pair, and it sells the same oven as a range and as a wall unit in gas and in electric. The behavior you can describe is identical on all of them; the first hour of the repair is not. A front-load washer has a drain filter the owner can open and a top-loader has nothing to reach from the front, and that single difference decides how the same afternoon goes.

  • Electric cooktop — The lock indicator is usually a small padlock and it is cleared by holding rather than tapping. This is the answer to the majority of unresponsive cooktops we are called about.
  • Cooktop over a wall oven — Worth checking the oven below still responds. When both are dead, the shared circuit is the place to start rather than either appliance.
  • Gas cooktop with electronic controls — Ignition and control are separate here, so a top that still clicks and lights while the panel ignores you has narrowed the problem down to the panel by itself.

Cracked glass is a different call

If the glass has a crack or a chip in it, stop using the cooktop entirely and say so when you book. It is not a cosmetic issue on an electric surface — the elements sit directly under the glass and a spill through a crack reaches them. That is a same-week job and it is a glass replacement rather than a control repair, which means it needs a different part ordered before anybody sets out.

Why the lock catches so many people

The control lock exists so a child cannot switch a burner on, and it works. It also engages under a cleaning cloth, and once set the cooktop is completely and convincingly dead. We would rather you found it in thirty seconds on the phone than paid for a visit to be shown a padlock, which is why it is the first thing we ask about.

Before you book

Questions about Maytag cooktop controls will not respond

One zone works and the others do not.

Then the panel is reading you and something downstream is not, which moves this away from the lock and toward the elements or the board. Worth a visit.

It came back on its own.

That is typical of heat or moisture and it is not something to worry about once. If it starts happening weekly, the panel is worth looking at.

Can I use the oven underneath?

If the oven responds normally and the cooktop above it is merely unresponsive rather than stuck on, yes. If a cooktop zone is stuck on, switch the whole thing off at the breaker and use neither.
