Symptom

Maytag dryer will not start

A dryer that will not begin is either not being allowed to or not being powered, and the two look identical from the front. On this badge the first question is always whether the display is showing anything at all, because a dark panel and a lit one send us to opposite ends of the machine.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

  • The door switch or latch

The machine will not run with the door reporting open. A worn switch or a striker that has moved gives exactly this, and it is a small part.

    Diagnostic visit from $89
  • Power interrupted

A brief outage leaves PF on the display and the cycle abandoned. Common here in summer and it is not damage — the machine simply wants restarting.

    Diagnostic visit from $89
  • Control lock

Set by a stray hand or a wipe of the panel. Every button is dead and the machine looks finished. It is not.

    Diagnostic visit from $89
  • The breaker or outlet

Fully tripped on an electric machine, or a standard outlet on a gas one. Test the outlet with something else before booking anybody.

    Diagnostic visit from $89
  • The start switch or the control board

What is left when the four above are cleared. It is a real repair, and it is uncommon enough that we would rather clear the free ones first.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Is the panel lit at all?

Dark is power. Lit is lock, door or control. That is the first fork in the road.

  2. 02

    Shut the door hard

Firmly enough to hear the latch. Then press start again before doing anything else.

  3. 03

    Look for a padlock symbol

Control lock disables every button and is cleared by holding one of them for a few seconds.

  4. 04

    Reset power fully

Unplug for a minute, or the breaker fully off and on. This clears PF and a good many control sulks with it.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “PF means the machine lost power mid-cycle and is waiting to be told what to do”
  • “A control lock stops everything and is easy to set by accident”
  • “A door that does not latch is the most common reason a dryer sits still”
Heavy condensation running down the inside of a dark kitchen window at night, the room behind it unlit and out of focus

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Maytag dryer will not start

Three things, in this order

Open and close the door firmly and listen for the latch — a door that looks shut and is not is the single commonest cause, and the striker gets knocked out of line by a laundry basket more often than anybody admits. Next, look for a lock indicator on the panel; Maytag shows a control lock and it disables the whole console. Third, unplug the machine for a minute or cycle the breaker fully off and on. Between them those three account for most of the dryers that will not start and none of them costs anything.

What it usually means, by the kind of machine

One complaint, several machines. This maker still sells a top-load washer with an agitator alongside one without, a front-loader, and a stacked pair, and it sells the same oven as a range and as a wall unit in gas and in electric. The behavior you can describe is identical on all of them; the first hour of the repair is not. A front-load washer has a drain filter the owner can open and a top-loader has nothing to reach from the front, and that single difference decides how the same afternoon goes.

  • Electric — A dark panel on an electric machine is usually the breaker, and it is the same double-pole breaker that produces the no-heat complaint. Half tripped gives no heat; fully tripped gives nothing at all.
  • Gas — A gas dryer runs its drum and controls on an ordinary outlet, so a dead panel here is a standard household circuit question and easy to test with anything else that plugs in.
  • Stacked laundry center — Worth confirming the washer half still works. If both halves are dead the answer is upstream of the appliance entirely.

Summer outages and PF

Afternoon storms take the power out briefly across most of this region several times a season, and a dryer that was running when it happened will hold PF and wait. The load is fine, the machine is fine, and nothing needs replacing — but people reasonably read a code on a display as damage. If the machine came back with PF showing after weather, restart it and use it.

What we clear before we quote

Door, lock, power. All three cost nothing and between them they explain most of these calls. Only when they are genuinely eliminated does the start switch and the control become worth talking about, and by then the conversation is a specific one rather than a guess.

Gas and electric part company here

An electric dryer runs everything from a 240-volt circuit, so a dead panel points at that breaker. A gas dryer runs its drum, its controls and its igniter from an ordinary household outlet, which means the same symptom sends us to a completely different place. It is worth knowing which one you have before you call, and if you are not sure, look behind the machine for a gas line — that settles it in a second.

Before you book

Questions about Maytag dryer will not start

The drum turns by hand, so is the motor fine?

Not necessarily, but it does tell us the drum is not seized and the belt has not wrapped anything. It is useful information, so try it before you call.

It hums but does not turn.

That is a different symptom from doing nothing at all, and it points at the motor or something jammed against the drum rather than at a switch. Say so when you book.

It worked this morning.

Then start with power and the door. Something that stopped between two loads on the same day is more often circumstance than a part.
