Symptom

Maytag oven will not heat

An oven that accepts a temperature and never reaches it is usually reporting the problem somewhere, because this is the half of the house where this maker prints numbers. Look at the display before you look at anything else — an F code here is a specific, published condition and it saves most of the guessing.

  • From $89 diagnostic, credited to the repair
  • 59 cities and neighborhoods covered
  • OEM parts available on order
  • In writing the price, before anything is opened

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Copy the code exactly

Including whether there is a space or a dash. That detail identifies the control generation.

  2. 02

Watch the element or the igniter

Whichever your oven has. Five minutes of watching names the part.

  3. 03

Try broil as well as bake

An oven that broils and will not bake has two separate elements and one of them is fine.

  4. 04

    Look for a demo indicator

Rare, but when it applies nothing else will make sense until it is cleared.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “A code on the display is worth writing down before the power is cut”
  • “Gas and electric ovens fail in completely different places”
  • “A demonstration mode left on will heat nothing at all and looks like a dead oven”
A folded towel and a shallow plastic tray laid out on near-black tile in front of a closed appliance, nothing else in the frame

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Maytag oven will not heat

If you are looking up maytag oven not heating, this is the page: oven will not heat, what it usually turns out to be, and the check worth doing before anybody is called out in Miami.

Look, listen, and read

Read the display and copy any code exactly, spaces and all. Then set the oven to bake at a high temperature and watch: on an electric oven the bake element at the floor should begin to glow along its length within a few minutes, and on a gas oven the igniter behind the floor vent should glow orange and bring on a flame inside a minute. Whichever of those does not happen is the repair. While you are there, check for a demonstration or showroom mode indicator — ovens that came out of a display floor sometimes arrive with it set, and they will run every light and every beep while heating nothing.

What it usually means, by the kind of machine

One complaint, several machines. This maker still sells a top-load washer with an agitator alongside one without, a front-loader, and a stacked pair, and it sells the same oven as a range and as a wall unit in gas and in electric. The behavior you can describe is identical on all of them; the first hour of the repair is not. A front-load washer has a drain filter the owner can open and a top-loader has nothing to reach from the front, and that single difference decides how the same afternoon goes.

  • Electric wall oven — The bake element sits at the floor of the cavity where you can see it. An element that has burned through usually shows a blister or a break, and a broil element that still works while bake does not is a helpful clue rather than a coincidence.
  • Electric range — Same elements in a smaller cavity, with the added check that the surface still works. A range with live burners and a dead oven is not a power problem.
  • Gas range — Watch the igniter through the oven floor vent. It should glow orange and then the burner should light within a minute. Glow with no flame is the classic gas oven picture and it is a specific repair.
  • Double wall oven — One cavity working and the other not is the most useful thing you can tell us, because it takes the shared supply out of the question immediately.

Where the numbers help

Cooking is where this maker publishes most densely — the archive on this site carries a page for each of the conditions a range or wall oven will show, because the maker documents them. That means an oven complaint often arrives already half-diagnosed, and the thing standing between you and that is whether the code got written down before the breaker was cycled. It is the one request we make on the phone.

Built in and heavy

A wall oven has to come out of its cabinet on rails and it is a two-person lift. That is worth knowing when a visit is booked — it is not a longer diagnosis than a range, but it is a longer visit, and clearing the counter and the floor in front of it before we arrive genuinely shortens it.

Gas and electric split immediately

There is almost no overlap between the two. An electric oven that will not heat is an element, a relay or a sensor; a gas oven that will not heat is an igniter, a valve or a supply. That is why the first question is which one you have, and the second is what you saw when you watched it try. Between those two answers most of this page has already been narrowed to one line of it before anybody sets out.

Questions about Maytag oven will not heat

The broiler works, so is the oven fine?

It tells us the oven has power and a working control, which is real progress. Bake and broil are separate elements, so a good broiler and a cold oven usually points straight at the bake element.

It heats but takes forever.

That is a different page and usually a sensor or a weak element rather than a dead one. Mention that it eventually gets there — it changes the diagnosis.

I cleared the code and now it will not come back.

That happens, and it is not a problem — a code that appeared once and never returned may have been a single event. If the oven still will not heat, we work from what it does rather than what it said.
