- “Food directly in front of a vent will freeze in a perfectly healthy refrigerator”
- “A cabinet that is nearly empty runs colder and swings further”
- “Consistent freezing everywhere on the shelf points at the control rather than at placement”
Symptom
Maytag refrigerator freezing food
Too cold is a real problem and it gets reported far less than too warm, usually after a month of throwing produce away. It is also one of the few refrigeration complaints with a genuinely good chance of being settled by a setting and a rearrangement rather than by a repair.

Five ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
Food sitting in the airflow
Not a defect. The air coming out of a vent is well below freezing and anything in its path will freeze regardless of the setting.
Diagnostic visit from $89 -
The temperature setting
Knocked, or turned down during a warm spell and never turned back. Worth confirming before anything else.
Diagnostic visit from $89 -
The damper between compartments
It controls how much freezer air reaches the fresh food side. Stuck open, everything in the cabinet runs cold.
Refrigerator not cooling repair from $145 -
The thermistor
The cabinet reads itself as warmer than it is and keeps cooling. It produces a steady, consistent over-cooling rather than an occasional one.
Refrigerator not cooling repair from $145 -
The control board
Least common. It is diagnosed after the damper and the sensor, both of which are smaller and much more likely.
Appliance control board repair from $265

Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.
-
01
Measure overnight
A glass of water and a thermometer on the middle shelf. Read it before the door has been opened.
-
02
Note what froze and where
Placement against the vent explains most of these and takes one look to establish.
-
03
Check the setting
Then leave it alone for twenty-four hours. These cabinets take a full day to settle after any change.
-
04
Is it nearly empty?
A sparse refrigerator swings more. Filling it with a few bottles of water genuinely helps and costs nothing.
How it shows up
What people describe when they call
A shortcut
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.
If there is no code at all
The data plate is inside the cabinet, upper left wall or behind the grille. All models

About Maytag refrigerator freezing food
Measure before you adjust
Put a glass of water on the middle shelf with a thermometer in it and read it in the morning. Somewhere between thirty-seven and forty degrees is right; a reading in the low thirties explains everything without any part being involved. Look at where the frozen items were sitting — directly under or in front of a vent is the answer more often than not, and moving them a hand's width solves it. Check the temperature setting itself, because these are easy to knock, and note whether the cabinet is unusually empty. A refrigerator with very little in it has nothing to hold its temperature steady and swings much further between cycles.
What it usually means, by the kind of machine
One complaint, several machines. This maker still sells a top-load washer with an agitator alongside one without, a front-loader, and a stacked pair, and it sells the same oven as a range and as a wall unit in gas and in electric. The behavior you can describe is identical on all of them; the first hour of the repair is not. A front-load washer has a drain filter the owner can open and a top-loader has nothing to reach from the front, and that single difference decides how the same afternoon goes.
- Side by side — The cold air enters through vents on the tall back wall, and anything pressed against them freezes. It is the layout where placement matters most.
- French door bottom freezer — Air enters at the top rear, so the upper shelf at the back is the cold spot. Milk kept there will develop crystals while the same milk in the door will not.
- Top freezer — The vent sits at the top of the fresh food space directly under the freezer, and the shelf immediately below it is the coldest place in the cabinet by some margin.
Twenty-four hours between changes
The commonest mistake with this complaint is adjusting the setting, checking in an hour, and adjusting again. These cabinets respond slowly and a change made at breakfast is not fully expressed until the following morning. Two adjustments in a day usually end with a refrigerator further from right than it started, and it is why we ask people to make one change and wait.
The cheapest fix on the site
Moving a bag of salad six inches is not a repair and we are not going to charge anybody for suggesting it. If the frozen items are all in the same spot and everything elsewhere in the cabinet is fine, the refrigerator is working correctly and the layout is the problem. That answer is worth a phone call rather than a visit, and it is the one we give most often on this page.

Questions about Maytag refrigerator freezing food
Only the back of the shelf freezes.
That is placement rather than a defect — the back of the shelf is where the air comes in. Move things forward a few inches and watch for a couple of days.
Everything freezes, including the door bins.
That is different, and it points at the damper or the sensor rather than at where things are sitting. Worth a visit.
Can I just turn it up?
Try it, one step, and give it a full day. If the cabinet then runs too warm at the same time as freezing the back shelf, the control is not the problem and placement or the damper is.
