Symptom

Maytag washer leaking water

Water under a washer travels before it stops, so where you find it is almost never where it left the machine. The useful question is not where the puddle is but when it appears — during the fill, during the wash, or only when the machine empties. Each answer points at a different third of the machine.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

  • A supply hose or the inlet valve

Water appears while the machine is filling and often when it is not running at all. Rubber supply hoses in this climate are on borrowed time after about five years.

  • The door seal on a front-load machine

Grit caught in the fold, or a boot that has hardened and split at the bottom. Water shows at the front of the machine during the wash.

    Washer leak repair from $155
  • Too much detergent

Foam finds gaps that water never would, and it comes over the top of the tub rather than through anything. Maytag reads the same condition as Sud before you see it.

Washer excess suds service from $99
  • The drain hose or its connection

Water only while the machine empties, and often only on the spin when the pump is pushing hardest. It can be a clamp rather than a part.

Washer drain pump replacement from $175
  • The tub seal

Water from the center underneath, usually with a bearing noise that started months earlier. This is the one that decides whether a fifteen-year-old machine is worth repairing.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Turn the taps off

Both of them, before you do anything else. It costs nothing and it takes the worst version of this off the table.

  2. 02

    Dry it and use paper

A dry floor and paper towels show you the return path. A bath towel absorbs the evidence along with the water.

  3. 03

    Watch all three stages

Fill, wash, drain. Name the one that brings the water back and most of the diagnosis is already done.

  4. 04

    Feel around the boot

Front-load only, and worth doing with the machine off and the door wide open. Most of what is found there is not a repair at all.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “When it leaks matters more than where the water ends up”
  • “Overdosing is a real cause on these machines and shows up as Sud before it shows up on the floor”
  • “A leak on a tile floor in a second-floor laundry closet is worth stopping the same day”

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Maytag washer leaking water

Stop it, then watch it

Shut the water off at the two taps behind the machine before anything else; a supply hose that has started to weep is the one leak that gets dramatically worse while nobody is home, and these hoses are the oldest rubber in most laundry rooms. Dry the floor completely and put down paper towels rather than a bath towel, so you can see exactly where the water reappears. Then run a short cycle and watch it through fill, wash and drain. Which of those three brings the water back is the single most useful thing you can tell us.

What it usually means, by the kind of machine

One complaint, several machines. This maker still sells a top-load washer with an agitator alongside one without, a front-loader, and a stacked pair, and it sells the same oven as a range and as a wall unit in gas and in electric. The behavior you can describe is identical on all of them; the first hour of the repair is not. A front-load washer has a drain filter the owner can open and a top-loader has nothing to reach from the front, and that single difference decides how the same afternoon goes.

  • Top-load agitator — Water at the back during fill is usually a hose or the inlet valve. Water at the front of the cabinet on a top-loader has generally come over the top of the basket, which means an overfill rather than a split.
  • Top-load impeller (HE) — These use markedly less water, so a puddle that appears during the wash is a bigger signal here than on an older machine. Suds pushing up and over is the common version.
  • Front load — The door seal is the first place to look and the easiest for an owner to check. Run a finger around the inside fold of the boot — grit, a hair clip, or a torn edge will be right there.

Why the timing is the diagnosis

There are only three ways water is under pressure inside a washer, and they happen at three different moments. Supply pressure exists during fill, tub water exists during wash, and pump pressure exists during drain. A leak that only appears in one of the three has already told us which system it belongs to before anyone has taken a panel off, and a leak that appears in all three is a tub problem rather than a plumbing one.

Second-floor laundry and tile

A great many South Florida laundry closets sit upstairs over a finished ceiling, and that changes the urgency more than the repair. When the machine is above living space we would rather see it the same day and leave the taps off in the meantime than book it comfortably for later in the week.

Questions about Maytag washer leaking water

It only leaks on big loads.

That is usually level rather than damage — a fuller tub sits higher, and it finds a gap that a half load never reaches. It still wants looking at, but it is rarely the expensive version.

Can I keep using it if I mop up?

Not if the machine is over a finished floor or a downstairs ceiling. On a slab, and with the taps off between loads, it is a decision you can make with the facts in front of you.

The water is soapy rather than clear.

Then it came from inside the tub rather than from the supply, and the dose is worth halving before we get there. Suds leaks often stop on their own once the detergent comes down.
