Symptom

Maytag washer will not start or will not fill

Two complaints that arrive in the same phone call and are cleared in the same order: is the machine getting power, is it getting water, and is it being allowed to begin. A Maytag washer will not start a cycle it cannot complete, so a machine that sits there is often reporting something rather than broken.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Are both taps fully open?

Hot and cold. A machine fed by one will fill slowly enough to be reported as a supply problem.

  2. 02

    Does the panel light up?

A dark panel is power. A lit panel that will not start is control, lock or water. That single observation splits the job.

  3. 03

    Unplug for one minute

Not ten seconds — a full minute. It clears the control and it costs nothing to try before booking.

  4. 04

    Look for a lock symbol

Control lock and child lock both stop everything and both are easy to set by accident while wiping the panel down.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “LF is the machine saying the water took too long to arrive, rather than a verdict on the machine”
  • “A control that has locked itself out looks exactly like a dead machine”
  • “A lid or door that will not report closed stops the cycle before it starts”
A neat stack of folded towels standing on the closed lid of a dryer in a dim laundry room, one cold light raking across them

About Maytag washer will not start or will not fill

The five-minute list

Check both taps are actually open — one of them being half-closed after a plumbing visit is more common than it ought to be, and a machine filling through one hose will report a long fill rather than a closed tap. Look at whether the control panel lights at all: a completely dark panel is an outlet or a breaker question and not a washer question yet. If the panel lights but the cycle will not begin, hold the start button rather than tapping it, and check whether a control lock or a child lock is showing. Then unplug the machine for a full minute and plug it back in, which resets the control without touching anything else.

What it usually means, by the kind of machine

One complaint, several machines. This maker still sells a top-load washer with an agitator alongside one without, a front-loader, and a stacked pair, and it sells the same oven as a range and as a wall unit in gas and in electric. The behavior you can describe is identical on all of them; the first hour of the repair is not. A front-load washer has a drain filter the owner can open and a top-loader has nothing to reach from the front, and that single difference decides how the same afternoon goes.

  • Top-load agitator — Lid switch first. On these machines the cycle will not begin with the lid reporting open, and the switch is a wearing part on a machine used several times a week for a decade.
  • Top-load impeller (HE) — These lock the lid on some cycles and not on others, which produces the confusing version — it starts on one setting and refuses on another.
  • Front load — The door lock is the gate on everything. A machine that gives one click and then goes quiet is trying to lock and not managing it.

Why we ask about the taps first

The water here is hard, and the small screens inside the inlet hoses collect scale steadily. A machine that fills more slowly every year eventually crosses the line where the control decides the water is not coming, and it stops. That reads as a broken washer and it is a ten-minute clean. We ask about it first because it is the answer often enough to be worth the question.

When it is genuinely the lock

Lid switches and door locks are the most-used moving part on any washer — several thousand operations over the life of the machine. They wear, they are cheap, they are stocked, and replacing one on a machine that is otherwise sound is one of the more satisfying repairs on this badge.

Two symptoms, one visit

A machine that will not start and a machine that will not fill are described identically over the phone and they are diagnosed in the same visit, which is why they share this page. The order is fixed — power, then water, then the lock, then the control — and every step of it removes a whole category rather than a single part. By the time the fourth one is reached the conversation is about a specific board rather than about a machine that does not work.

Before you book

Questions about Maytag washer will not start or will not fill

It fills but only with cold water.

That is one of the two supply paths not delivering, and it is usually the hot tap or the hot side of the inlet valve rather than anything to do with temperature control.

It started once and now it will not.

Note what cycle it was on both times. Machines that start on one setting and refuse on another are usually meeting a lock requirement that only some cycles impose.

The panel lights but no buttons respond.

Try the power cycle first and look for a lock indicator. If the panel is lit and genuinely deaf to every button after that, the control is worth looking at.
