Open the door and look before you do anything else. There are three things worth noticing and they point in three different directions.

A dry detergent cup. The cup opens partway through, so a cup still closed and full means the machine never reached the main wash. That puts the problem before it: the fill, or the door lock that has to report closed before anything begins.

Standing water that is clean. The machine washed, rinsed and then could not empty. That is the drain, and it is the most common of the three by a wide margin on this badge.

Standing water that is dirty, with the cup open. It stopped during the wash. That is the wash motor, or a temperature the machine was waiting for and did not get.

None of those three is a guess. They are readings, and they take ten seconds.

The lights are the other half, and they are perishable

This machine does not print numbers the way a range does. It reports with a clean light, a control light, a sanitize light or a row of status lights across the front edge, and a repeating group with a gap between repeats is deliberate.

That pattern is the only diagnostic the machine offers, and the breaker erases it.

So the request is small and specific: before you reset anything, watch it through two full repeats and write down which light, how many flashes, and roughly how long the pause is. Thirty seconds of watching, and it survives when your memory of it will not.

Then the resets, in order

Close the door firmly first. A latch that has not fully engaged ends a cycle wherever it happens to be, and it is the reason some machines stop at a different point every time. It costs two seconds to eliminate.

Look for a control lock indicator next. It disables the panel and it is set by a cloth during cleaning more often than anybody would guess.

Only then cut power at the breaker for a full minute and restore it. Run a short cycle afterward and watch what happens. Whether the same pattern comes back is the most valuable single observation on this page, because it separates an event from a condition.

Storms, and why this is a seasonal question here

The power goes out briefly across most of this region several times a season, and a dishwasher running when it happens holds its place and waits. The load is fine, the machine is fine, and nothing needs replacing.

People reasonably read a blinking panel as damage. It usually is not, and the proof is simple: restart it, and if it completes normally that was the whole story. If the same pattern returns on the next cycle, something real is being reported and it will not be reset away.

What each of the three findings usually costs

A drain problem is the cheapest and the most likely. It is often the filter, which lifts out by hand and is meant to be cleaned; sometimes it is glass or a fruit sticker in the sump; sometimes it is the disposal knockout plug left in place after the sink was worked on, which blocks the machine completely and is not a dishwasher problem at all.

A fill or door problem is next, and both involve small stocked parts.

A wash motor is the largest of the three and the least common, and it is diagnosed rather than assumed — a machine that stops during the wash with dirty water in it has narrowed things down but it has not named a part.

The one that is not the dishwasher at all

A dishwasher drains into the same pipe as the kitchen sink, and about a third of the time a machine that stops before it can empty is reporting the state of that pipe rather than its own.

Run the disposal for thirty seconds before the next cycle. A shared waste with a loaded disposal pushes water back into the dishwasher instead of taking it away, and the machine reads that exactly as a drain it could not complete.

Then look under the sink for the drain hose. It should rise high under the counter before it drops. A hose lying flat siphons the sink into the machine, which produces standing water that was never the dishwasher's to begin with.

If the sink itself is slow, the pipe is the problem and a plumber is the right first call. We would rather tell you that than book a visit to say it at your door.
