A Maytag Fridge Not Cooling While the Freezer Works Is an Airflow Problem

These cabinets do not cool the fresh food side directly. There is one coil, it lives behind the back wall of the freezer, and a fan blows the air it has chilled across into the refrigerator through vents.

That single fact is the whole page. If the freezer is holding, cold is being made — which means the compressor is running, the refrigerant is doing its job, and the sealed system is intact. Those are the expensive answers, and they are gone.

What is left is delivery. Something between the coil and the fresh food compartment is stopping the air, and there are only three candidates.

Frost, which is first by a distance

The coil sits behind a panel at the back of the freezer, and it is designed to accumulate a little ice and then have it cleared automatically on a schedule. When that clearing stops happening, ice builds across the coil until air can no longer pass through it.

The freezer barely notices at first: it is cold in there anyway, and a coil packed with ice is still a coil packed with cold. The refrigerator notices immediately, because it depends entirely on air moving.

The visible sign is a sheet of frost across the back wall of the freezer, and it is worth looking for before anything else. This maker publishes no code for it — there is no numbered condition for a refrigerator defrost circuit anywhere in its support base — so the ice is the evidence.

The fan, which is second

The evaporator fan sits with the coil and pushes the air. When it stops, the freezer holds and the refrigerator warms over a day or two, which is exactly the pattern people describe.

You can usually hear it. Open the freezer, hold the door switch in with a finger so the appliance thinks the door is shut, and listen. A running fan is audible. Silence with no frost on the coil is a fan; silence with a coil full of ice may just be a fan that cannot turn.

The damper, which is third and least common

Between the two compartments there is a controlled opening that decides how much cold air the refrigerator gets. Stuck closed, the fresh food side warms while the freezer stays perfect.

It is the least likely of the three, and it is diagnosed after the other two rather than guessed at. It is also the one that occasionally produces the opposite complaint — stuck open, and the refrigerator freezes the lettuce.

The setting that is not a repair at all

Before any of that, look at the display. These cabinets have a cooling mode that can be switched off entirely, and it is set by accident far more often than anybody would guess — a cloth across the panel, a child, a hand reaching past.

A refrigerator in that state is warm, healthy and doing what it was told. It is the cheapest possible answer to this question and it costs one glance to eliminate.

Why the cold side is diagnosed by hand here

Every other appliance section of this site links to conditions the maker publishes. Refrigeration barely does: twenty-six lit or numbered conditions across five hundred and nine refrigeration pages, and none of them describes any of the three things above.

That is not a gap in our writing. It is the make, and pretending otherwise would send you looking for a code that was never published. Why defrosting it yourself hides the problem

Emptying the freezer and leaving both doors open for a day will clear the ice, and the refrigerator will cool properly again afterward. That is real and it works.

What it does not do is address why the ice formed. The defrost circuit exists to clear that coil on a schedule; if it has stopped, a manual defrost buys about a month before the same thing happens again. So it is worth doing when the food is at stake. It is not worth mistaking for a repair.

If the fresh food side has been above forty degrees for more than about four hours, move what matters into a cooler now rather than after the visit is booked.

This is worth stating rather than assuming. On a cabinet where the freezer is still holding, most households leave everything where it is and wait, and the most expensive part of a warm refrigerator is usually what was inside it rather than the repair.
